Our Opportunities

On Thursday 8 July 2021 the Governor-General issued Letters Patent establishing a Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.

The Royal Commission will be based in Sydney, NSW.

The Royal Commission is seeking Policy specialists (EL1), Policy Officers and Data Analysis specialists in the Policy and Research branches. These roles will lead to the development of critical content for the DVSRC’s interim and final reports. This will include researching and analysing a broad range of material, identifying key issues and proposing solutions for systemic reform.

Occupants of these roles will:

  • lead and deliver complex policy and/or data analysis, and provide strategic advice to the Chair and Commissioners, SES and Senior Counsel
  • demonstrate critical thinking and sound policy analysis to identify potential recommendations that are supportable, implementable and sustainable
  • lead research, policy analysis and report writing with a focus on the interim and final reports and recommendations, ensuring that outputs reach quality standards
  • share knowledge and expertise across the Policy Branches and the broader DVSRC by working collaboratively and fostering productive working relationships
  • demonstrate the ability to work flexibly, respond to changing priorities and a demanding workload
  • consult, collaborate and communicate effectively with teams across the Commission, including the Policy Coordination, Data, Research, Liaison, Legal and Corporate teams
  • uphold and model the APS Values, Code of Conduct, Employment Principles and AGD Performance Expectations.

If offered a role with the Royal Commission in other than their home locality, candidates will generally be expected to meet their own costs in relocating to the office locality based in Sydney, NSW. In exceptional circumstances the Royal Commission may consider limited relocation assistance.

These roles would suit self-driven and experienced candidates with:

  • strong policy and/or data analysis skills, including  experience with policy analysis in complex and intersecting policy and operational environments
  • experience in influencing policy outcomes, including the ability to identify and assess the effectiveness of policy levers available to address complex issues
  • significant experience in providing strategic advice on policy issues which lead to options for proposed solutions
  • strong analytical and critical thinking skills to explore and develop options, including both legislative and policy frameworks
  • experience in legislative interpretation/review, and the ability to consider possible solutions within the context of current and/or future laws
  • ability to engage with and assess complex and potentially conflicting material from a wide range of sources
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience with writing reports for public audiences
  • excellent time management skills
