The Attorney-General's Department (AGD) work is central to the productivity, freedom and wellbeing of all Australians. Upholding the rule of law is integral to the everyday issues of rights, safety, governance and justice. We support the Attorney-General as First Law Officer and as Minister for Industrial Relations. His role encapsulate protecting and promoting the rule of law, fostering safe, fair and productive workplaces, providing strong oversight and accountability, and acting as principal legal adviser to government. We also support the Assistant Minister to the Attorney-General.

As a graduate you will work on a variety of interesting and important policy and program issues and legal matters, often in unique and precedent-setting work of importance to Australia. You will interact with real clients, the Australian community, key stakeholders and other government jurisdictions to help achieve the Australian Government's policy, program and legal objectives.

We also facilitate two separate affirmative measures recruitment processes for:

  • Indigenous Australians - Affirmative Measures (policy and program and legal practice stream/s)
  • Disability - Affirmative Measures (policy and program stream)

We are looking for engaged and highly capable graduates who:

In return, you will be supported to become a well-rounded policy and program officer, practising economist or a legal professional with sound skills, knowledge and experience in an area of law.

On successful completion of the program you will be offered a permanent placement with the department.

In 12 months, you can:

  • gain diverse experience through a number of rotations
  • explore potential career paths
  • build valuable networks with previous graduates, supervisors and senior leaders and learn from mentors
  • contribute to our workplace culture by managing fundraising activities, cultural activities and social  events
  • develop new skills and knowledge through an engaging orientation program and extensive development program
  • access further studies, including the opportunity to complete your practical legal training leading to your admission (required for the legal streams)
  • work on a variety of interesting and important policy issues, program delivery and legal matters, often in unique and precedent-setting work of importance to Australia.

We provide a great opportunity for graduates to form strong networks through activities such as the AGD Social Club, lunchtime sports and a diverse range of networks including the Women's Network, Indigenous Employee Network, Celebrating Ability Network, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Network and the Pride Network.

Affirmative Measures: Disability (policy and program stream) graduates

The Affirmative Measures – Disability (policy and program) is open only to people with disability.

As well as the essential requirements of the Policy and Program Stream, you will be need to provide further evidence of disability. This could be a:

  • certificate or letter from a registered medical practitioner
  • letter from a Disability Employment Service or jobactive provider
  • letter from a secondary or tertiary institution disability services unit where you were a recent student.

Successful applicants in this process will participate in the policy and program stream graduate program.
