The Integrity and Security Division within the department is undertaking a review of the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988 (the Review) as announced by Government in December 2019. The Review implements a recommendation of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Digital Platforms inquiry report and will consider whether the scope of the Privacy Act remains fit for purpose in the digital age – that is, whether privacy settings empower consumers, protect their data and best serve the Australian economy.
The Review will also consider the case for two of the six amendments that the ACCC recommended be made to the Privacy Act which require further consideration and consultation, and will complement the reforms to the Privacy Act announced in March 2019. Those reforms involve strengthening penalties and enforcement powers for the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and introducing a binding privacy code for social media platforms and other online platforms that trade in personal information.
The Integrity and Security Division is looking for candidates with diverse skills and expertise at a range of levels (APS Level 5 to Executive Level 2) to comprise the Review team based in Canberra. The Review will run from mid‑2020 until 2021. The team’s staff will work with colleagues from across the Australian government, the states and territories, international partners and private sector experts to develop a blueprint for future privacy reforms.

Specific requirements of the role:
- a good understanding of Australian privacy law or the ability to quickly acquire this understanding
- strong policy development and research skills
- an ability to work autonomously and independently and to give clear direction
- strong communication skills and, specifically, the ability to engage effectively and strategically with stakeholders across government and business and in overseas jurisdictions
- strong written communication skills to produce high quality, well-structured documents that are strategic and fit for purpose
- a degree in law from an Australian tertiary institution or comparable overseas qualification (desirable)
