The Departmental Security Unit (DSU), as part of Human Resources, is responsible for ensuring that the Attorney-General’s (AGD) assets, information, people and reputation are protected from compromise, loss and harm.  The Department must comply with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework and the DSU manages the governance, physical, physical and information security requirements within that framework.

The position of the Personnel Security Advisor, DSU, plays an integral role in supporting the Director of the section in maintaining a secure environment and a strong security culture within the AGD. It is expected that this position will also obtain a general knowledge of physical security to assist the DSU with PSPF obligations.

The main functions of the role include the following:

  • managing personnel security protocols
  • managing information security protocols
  • managing implementation of PSPF policy protocols
  • managing secure database/s
  • administrative processes of the section
  • section planning and process improvement
  • managing contracts
  • managing security screening protocols and
  • managing stakeholders such as departments, agencies and contractors

  • Demonstrated  knowledge of the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework
  • Certificate IV in Government Security (Personnel Security)
  • Technical security qualifications

  • Communicates with influence – clearly explains and presents ideas and arguments; listens actively to others and questions things professionally and where appropriate

  • Optimises results by actively contributing to the achievement of outcomes and goals of the department Security Team, specifically as they relate to the provision and management of personnel security functions


  • Applicants must be Australian citizens to be eligible for employment at the Attorney-General’s Department.
  • The preferred applicant will be required to successfully undergo a police record check and be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at a specified clearance level. The preferred applicant must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo and maintain an Australian Government security clearance at Negative Vetting Level 2.   If required, applicant must to able to maintain and obtain a Top Secret Positive Vetting level clearance.
  • Successful applicants engaged into the APS will be subject to a Probationary period.
